What happens when little hands write letters, curious minds visit a post office and parents have no idea that something special is coming their way? A beautiful learning experience begins and so does a journey filled with excitement, discovery and love.
There is something special about receiving a handwritten letter. The excitement of opening an envelope, recognising the handwriting and reading a message someone has written just for you.
Now imagine that letter coming from your little one!
At Ekya Early Years, BTM Layout, our young learners had a surprise planned for their families. They were going to write letters, visit a real post office and send those letters home themselves.
And the best part? Their parents knew nothing about it!
It All Began with a Little Letter
Before the excitement of visiting the post office came a special task: writing letters to their families.
For our young learners, this was an opportunity to put their thoughts and feelings onto paper.
Every letter carried something personal. And knowing that their parents would eventually receive it made the experience even more exciting.
But writing the letter was only the beginning.
The children were about to discover what happens after a letter leaves their hands.
Where Does a Letter Go After We Post It?
Think about it from a child’s perspective. You put a letter inside a postbox, close the flap and walk away.
But where does it go next? Who takes it out? How does it find the right home?
These everyday questions became the starting point for an exciting visit to the local post office.
As our students stepped inside, they entered a place full of new things to observe.
The children observed how a post office works and explored how letters are collected, sorted, stamped and sent for delivery. They watched the postal staff carry out their daily responsibilities and discovered the important role these community helpers play in connecting families and communities.
They also learned how to post a letter and what happens after it is dropped into a postbox.
What could have been a lesson from a book became something they could see, experience and remember.
The Moment They Had Been Waiting For!
Then came the most exciting part of the day.
The postbox!
With their letters in hand, the children took turns walking up to the familiar green postbox.
Some stretched their little arms to reach the opening. Others carefully held their envelopes, ready to send their messages on their first big journey.
And then, one by one, the letters disappeared inside.
Just like that, their surprise was officially on its way!
By posting letters to their family members themselves, the children experienced the complete journey from writing a message to sending it.
For the children, it was an exciting moment of accomplishment. They hadn’t simply written a letter as part of a classroom activity. They had taken responsibility for sending it.
Before heading back, they also expressed their gratitude to the postal staff, thanking them for helping them understand how the post office works.
A Little Trip, A World of Learning
At Ekya, learning doesn’t stop when children step outside the classroom. Often, that is where some of the most interesting discoveries begin.
This wasn’t just a trip to learn about the postal system.
It was an opportunity to understand how communication connects people, how community helpers contribute to everyday life and how a simple action can bring happiness to someone else.
Through this experience, our young learners discovered four important things:
- Gratitude towards community helpers: Understanding the role of postal workers and learning to appreciate their contributions.
- How to post letters: Learning the process of sending a letter, from preparing it to placing it in a postbox.
- Observing the post office: Exploring how the post office functions and how letters are handled and sent for delivery.
- Posting letters to family members: Experiencing the joy and responsibility of sending something they had created to someone they love.
The experience brought together writing, observation, communication, independence and gratitude in a way that felt natural to the children.
Rather than being told how a letter travels, our learners got to begin that journey themselves.
That is the difference experiential learning makes at Ekya. Children are encouraged to connect what they learn with the world around them, building understanding through real experiences.
And when learning is connected to something they care about, like sending a letter to their parents, it becomes even more personal.
Now Comes the Sweetest Part: Waiting!
The letters have been posted, but the story isn’t quite over.
Somewhere along their journey, little envelopes filled with love are making their way to the families who are yet to discover what is inside.
And our young learners? They’re eagerly waiting for the day their letters arrive!
For parents, it will be a beautiful surprise. For the children, it will be the joy of knowing that something they created has travelled all the way home.
At Ekya Early Years, sometimes the biggest lessons come from the smallest experiences. And sometimes, all it takes is a little letter to create a memory that stays with a family.
